As a bicyclist, I was facinated by the bikes people were riding, often with mom, dad, and a kid aboard. Rohan joked that they'd sometimes throw luggage and the dog on the back as well.

Just off the road between Columbo and Kandy is the government run baby elephant orphanage, which is worth visiting. Here the 40 elephants at the orphange are having one of their baths in the nearby river.

I love food, and one of the treats was to see the various fruits available at roadside stands. Always colorful, and full of strange and wonderful items. These are on the road from Kandy to Columbo. Rohan wouldn't let me buy a durien while on the road, so I had to sneak out one morning and bring one back on my own!

At the southern tip of Sri Lanka is the natural harbor of Galle where the Dutch constructed a fort to protect their trading interests in the area. The ramparts and the clocktower remain as one of the best preserved on the island.

We stopped at a Hindu temple in Columbo, which amazed me with it's vibrant colors. Here's a statue of one of the gods up close. Imagine a building with hundreds of these!

Just outside of downtown Columbo lies the Petta, a dense shopping district, packed with stores, people selling wares on the sidewalks in front of stores, the narrow streets jammed with three wheeled taxis, and people everywhere. Here Rohan tries to find the address of a music shop we were seeking in order to find a nice Kandian drum as a souvenier. Believe it or not, we were successful!

Ah, my intrepid host, chauffeur, translator and tour guide. Rohan was my roommate in college, and without him this trip would never have happened. He forced me to take this picture under a sign at Galle that reads "Loitering and bad behavior are prohibited" Who, him?

One of our most amazing trips was to Sigryia, the mesa-top ex-capitol city. It juts out of the plains with a view of miles. We climbed it just before sunset, and soon had the plateau to ourselves. It was an amazing and peaceful place to watch the sunset.

I brought back a pair of sulwas for my roommates, and a silk kota for myself, so we had to have a group portrait after we returned. Who's that handsome guy in the middle?
