CHAFIN SEYMOUR attended his first African dance class at the age of 4 in Brooklyn, New York where he was raised. He also studied modern dance at Dance Theatre Workshop under the tutelage of Ellen Robbins. Chafin took a brief hiatus from dance in middle school to pursue his interest in music, singing in the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy with whom he performed at both Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. It was also at this time that he acted and performed in many school shows including Seussical, Grease, Good News, and Sweet Charity. He returned to dance after attending the Center for Creative Youth (CCY) summer program at Wesleyan University where he studied under KT Nielson from ODC San Francisco who reawakened his love of choreography. Following this experience he attended Bates Dance Festival Young Dancers Workshop for two consecutive years where he studied under Michael Foley, Jennifer Archibald, Shonach Mirk-Robles, Wyatt Jackson, and Karl Rogers. Chafin attended The Packer Collegiate Institute where he took dance under Steve Koplowitz and Katie Gibson. After his first summer at Bates he joined DanceWave Kid’s Company based in Brooklyn. Directed by Diane Jakobowitz and coached by Jenny Way-Rawe this teenage repertory company has learned the works of such greats as Twyla Tharp, Garth Fagan, Doug Varone and Paul Taylor. He choreographed a fifteen-minute work on the company as part of his senior thesis project. Currently Chafin is in pursuit of his BFA in dance from The Ohio State University in Columbus.
